Norway Maple

For the growers: maple (Lat. Acer platanoides) ÔÇô the author of the Latin name is Carl Linnaeus, who lived from 1707 till 1778. The Latin "acer" means "pointed" because maple leaf lobes are peaked. The tree has a dense, broadly ovate or semi-spherical crown. The root system is wide and strong. Grows up to 20-30 meters in height, less frequently - up to 38 m. Lives up to 150 - 200 years. Trees growing in an open area start cropping at the age of 15-30 years.

For the aesthetes: leaves with 5-7 pointed lobes, with aheart-shaped base. Flowers are yellowish green, of honey-like odor, melliferous, clustered in umbrella-like inflorescences. The bark is dark gray or slightly brown, finely ridged. That of young trees is smooth, light brown.

For the gourmands: with the melting snow starts to flow maple sap, which is sweet and has about 4 percent of sugar, thus syrup is produced.

For the curious: from the leaves is derived yellow and black paint used to dye woolen carpets. One hectare of the trees can release about 200 kg of sugar, although in Lithuania larger maple stands are rare. Woodpeckers love the sap. Maple wood is flexible, tough, yellowish, lustrous and of beautiful texture. The valuable wood is used for furniture, plywood, musical instruments, flooring, as well as production of rake and axe handles, carving work. Maple leaf tea promotes perspiration. Maple also is used to treat high blood pressure, central nervous system, anemia.
